The Recall of Warfarin Sodium (Part I)

Recently, Bristol-Mayers Squibb started a voluntary recall of a lot of Warfarin Sodium pills that have 5 mg dosage. This information is approved by the FDA press release. What was the main reason? “A single pill from returned bottles was tested and specialists have found that it had much higher potency than it was expected according to the label.” The FDA: “We recommend all patients who have these tablets of Warfarin Sodium not to interrupt their therapy, but it is necessary to consult with pharmacists and doctors about the further usage of this medication. If some people suspect that they have pills from the affected lot, it is needed to consult with a physician.”

In essence, Warfarin Sodium is commonly prescribed by doctors to treat and prevent the development of blood clots. So, too much of its active ingredients may result in excessive bleeding. The FDA: “The recall of these 5 mg pills was announced by its makers, a company Bristol-Myers Squibb, because they had an excessive dosage, which may lead to unexpected and unwanted consequences.”
